Why Should Indian Mega Cities be Represented Through Distinctive Logos

Let’s delve a little into an informal thought experiment – do the megacities of India need to be represented through compelling emblems? Can it be a wise move to bottle up the metropolitan ethos in a few specific logo designs? The answer to these queries could be fairly straightforward, when you consider the megacities of India should be seen as “brands” and that their emblems can drive a huge success.

Do Indian City Need Any Identification

In the case of many megacities, success is derived financially, through business and tourism. For a few, the success will be cultural, derived from their social activities. And for some, it’s acquired via popularity, through the citizens that reside within their boundaries and pay the taxes.

As we know, there are eight megacities in India – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat and Kolkata. India, a land of wonders is often mistaken as a continent because of its varied characteristics. The huge geographical diversity, colorful festivals & fairs, rich culture heritage, forts & monumental attractions, serene beaches, big rivers enhance the beauty of India many folds. And, the megacities add to the splendor. Each of them has specific identifying features, thereby earning prestigious titles such as “The City of Joy” (Kolkata), “City of Dreams” (Mumbai), “Silicon valley of India” (Bangalore), etc. Don’t you think these cities should have their own emblems?

In an attempt to tap into the creative side, the Delhi Government has already launched the “Delhi celebrates logo” and a theme song sung by Palash Sen, the lead vocalist of the music band Euphoria. How about enabling the other megacities to join the bandwagon? India may have numerous benefits of logo designing for its megacities –

A strong brand presence can help solidify the distinct characteristics of a city
It promotes a city’s business & tourism industry, thus bolstering a positive perception of it
An emblem plays a crucial role in invoking a city’s one-of-a-kind character
A logo, as a podium or backdrop of a city can give an insight to the city’s culture and tradition
Sometimes, a city logo aims to package cities, regions and countries as marketable products to attract potential tourists and investors

If you probe into different megacities of the world, you will see some of them have their unique and compelling emblems. A chain of world’s megacities like Melbourne, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Venice, etc. have their own logos. Collecting inspiration from their emblems, our country can also beef up the significance of its megacities through compelling logos. Probably, it’s time to make a strong contribution to the identity of India’s megacities. What do you think about it? Share your valuable feedback.
